Georgia Tech defensive lineman Emmanuel Johnson entered the transfer portal Monday, Johnson’s high-school coach confirmed to the AJC. Johnson, a freshman from North Charleston, S.C., played in seven games this season as a backup on the line. The decision was first reported earlier Monday by Rivals.

“He liked the school fine and all,” said Steve Laprad, coach at Fort Dorchester High in South Carolina. “I think he’s trying to get closer to home.”

Johnson is the second player in Tech’s 2020 signing class to put his name in the transfer database, following quarterback Tucker Gleason, who has announced his transfer to Toledo. Johnson had one tackle this season, in the Duke game Nov. 28.

Laprad said that college coaches were calling “from everywhere” Monday inquiring about Johnson. Pending the NCAA’s expected decision to permit all athletes to transfer once without having to sit out a year, Johnson could transfer anywhere with four years of eligibility and be able to play immediately.

Since the start of September, 11 Tech scholarship players are known to have put their name in the transfer database, including Johnson.
