Georgia Tech wide receiver Ahmarean Brown, who has been a playmaking force in his two seasons with the Yellow Jackets, has put his name into the transfer portal. The move brings to an end what had been a most promising start at Tech as a swift and dependable slot receiver who could stretch the field for the Jackets offense.
Brown confirmed his decision with a statement posted on Twitter on Friday morning.
“I’ve done a lot of thinking and I believe it’s in my best interest to enter the Transfer Portal and follow the journey God has for me,” Brown wrote after thanking the school, his parents, coaches, teammates and academic advisor.
Brown was one of a handful of prospects who signed in Tech’s 2019 signing class who were recruited solely after the hire of coach Geoff Collins. He made an instant impact, catching seven touchdowns passes to tie Calvin Johnson’s school record for touchdown receptions by a freshman. In addition to touchdown receptions, he led the team in catches with 21 and receiving yards with 396. His speed, shiftiness and ball skills made him a dangerous and promising element of the Tech offense.
In the preseason, Collins awarded him with a single-digit jersey, signifying his commitment to the team.
“For us, it’s a big deal to rock a single digit, and I’m just blessed to have it,” Brown said at the time.
While not seeing the ball as much as a sophomore, Brown continued to make plays, catching 11 passes for 183 yards with one touchdown. He also threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Jalen Camp on a trick play against Louisville and ran for another against Boston College.
“I think he’s an elite, athletic, explosive guy that we have to find ways to get the ball in his hands,” offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude said Oct. 20.
Brown, though, did not play in the three games coming out of Tech’s month-long break. He becomes the fifth Jackets player to put his name into the portal since the start of the season.
