Georgia's Lawrence wins 400 at NCAA Indoors

March 14, 2010Torrin Lawrence won Georgia’s first men’s NCAA Indoors title on the track Saturday, finishing first in the 400 meters in Fayetteville, Ark.
Lawrence, who has the world’s fastest 400 time this season (45.03 seconds), clocked a 45.23, four-tenths of a second faster than second-place Kirani James of Alabama. It was the first NCAA Indoors title since 2001 for the Georgia men, who have had two previous championships in field events (Hrvoje Verzi, triple jump, 1995; 2001, Andras Haklits, weight throw). Georgia finished 20th in the team standings.
Georgia Tech’s men were 17th, led by Alphonso Jordan’s third-place finish in the triple jump (53 feet, 4 ¼ inches).
