Georgia had a mostly quiet signing day Wednesday, with its 2023 commitments and signings largely settled before Feb. 1.
But there was one big piece of news for the Bulldogs, who added the commitment of five-star cornerback Ellis Robinson of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, to its 2024 class, bolstering what is rated the No. 1 recruiting class for 2024, per the 247Sports Composite. Robinson is listed as five-star recruit and the No. 1 cornerback in his class by 247Sports.
For the 2023 group, it should come as no surprise that Georgia, back-to-back national champions, comes away from signing day with a highly touted group of commits and signees.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the Bulldogs have the No. 2 team recruiting rank for this class, per 247Sports, with five five-star signees, 17 four-stars and four three-stars, behind only Alabama (with nine five-stars, 18 four-stars and one three-star) at No. 1. No. 3 Texas, No. 4 LSU and No. 5 Ohio State round out the top 5.
Athens continues to be a destination for some of the better defensive players in the country, including four of the Bulldogs’ five-star signees (Joenel Aguero, DB, 5-11, 205; Jordan Hall, DL, 6-4, 310; Samuel M’Pemba, OLB, 6-3, 245; and Damon Wilson, OLB, 6-4, 235).
Georgia coach Kirby Smart did not speak to media Wednesday to address the incoming signing class. In fairness, the Bulldogs had not announced any additional signees as of 5 p.m., with so much of the action taking place ahead of time. Jamal Meriweather, a three-star OL from Brunswick and Georgia commit, was expected to sign Wednesday afternoon.
Even though Georgia’s 2023 recruiting class packs quite a punch, Smart told reporters in December that rankings and star power don’t mean much to him: “I don’t even try anymore to analyze all the different things that go on. I just try to be good at it and good at managing it. It’s not something I have a lot of control over.
“A successful signing day is defined four years from now. I look backwards on that. I leave it to (media) to rate them because I can’t compare somebody else’s to ours because I don’t really look at somebody else’s. I only compare ours to what they do when they leave, not what they do when they arrive.”
There was a little news Wednesday, with four-star tight end prospect Walker Lyons (who had been considering Georgia) announcing his commitment to USC. Five-star recruit Duce Robinson, the top 2023 tight end in the country per 247Sports, with offers from Georgia, Alabama and Oregon, among others, said on ESPN2 that he would not make a commitment decision Wednesday (he also is a standout MLB prospect).
