Georgia’s highly touted defense was weakened a bit with the news that one of its primary defensive backs entered the transfer portal.

Divaad Wilson, a nickel back who started twice last season and played in every game except for the Sugar Bowl, made the announcement via his Twitter account Monday. The sophomore from Miami has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Wilson shared time at the Bulldogs’ nickel – or “Star” position – with senior Mark Webb. Generally, the 6-foot, 195-pound defensive back would take the field on passing downs while Webb was more of a run-stopping specialist. Wilson ranked sixth among Georgia’s defensive backs with 24 tackles and also had one interception in his only season on the field.

The Bulldogs have several other defensive backs who will compete for playing time at the star position, including returning lettermen Latavious Brini, William Poole, Christopher Smith, Ameer Speed and Tyrique Stevenson and freshmen Daran Branch, Major Burns, Jalen Kimber, and Kelee Ringo.

Defensive coordinator Dan Lanning substitutes liberally and inserts various players for specific situations based on their skill sets. The Bulldogs have 40 defensive players play at least 100 snaps last season, including Wilson.
