Falcons linebacker Philip Wheeler, who was signed on Oct. 20, has made an immediate impact.
With linebacker Justin Durant missing time because of injuries, Wheeler led the team in tackles with 10 against San Francisco and 11 against Minnesota.
Wheeler, a former Georgia Tech standout from Columbus, could play an important role in helping the Falcons slow Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin, who’s second in the NFL in rushing with 1,038 yards.
“It’s going to be a great challenge, just like the last game,” Wheeler said. “When they have a good running back, it’s a good challenge to have. If you want to be a good player, you have to go against the best and you want to beat the best.”
Wheeler, 30, was last with the 49ers. He’s also played for Indianapolis, Miami and Oakland.
“It feels good to be healthy and to be able to come out there and do what they ask of me and try to help the team,” Wheeler said. “I’m trying to do what I can to help.”
Falcons coach Dan Quinn has been pleased with the addition of Wheeler.
“For him to come in, and not have a lot of practice reps getting ready for the game, I thought he did a really good job (against Minnesota),” Quinn said. “He’s been a really valuable addition for us.”
