Here’s what Falcons coach Dan Quinn had to say after the 31-17 loss to the Saints on Thursday:

OPENING STATEMENT

“I thought the team played hard. The energy was right. The fight was right, but we didn’t play well in terms of our execution and in our ability to create takeaways and take care of the ball.”

On keys to the game. "I thought they were able to stop the run, and we didn't do a good job defensively to make that a factor in the game. I said we needed to finish drives in the end zone, and we had three turnovers in the red zone. It ended up being two for three for them."

On the team's state of mind. "It's a long weekend. We've got to re-set. We've got work to do to play like we need to play and like we are capable of playing."

On the turnovers. "When you have one, it feels like a lot. So, when you have three down there, I thought that was the real story in the game."

On regrouping after Saints took 17-3 lead. "I thought we'd have a chance in our two-minute (offense) right before the half and then have the ball again to start the (second) half. As poorly as we'd played early on, I knew we'd have a chance to get right back in the game. ... Not scoring on the opening drive was a setback for us. We said we were going to be aggressive on fourth downs, and I think we were four out of six. Not being able to get our run game established (hurt) the balance and the play-action plan. ... When we didn't match that in the run game that was one of the factors. They were able to control the clock with their run game. That, along with the turnovers was one of the stories."

On the Saints' play-action. "They definitely took some shots to the seam. The (first) touchdown is one that we see. The first one was one that we see quite a bit of the time. At the end of it, it wasn't the pass game that did us in today. I don't know what they end up throwing for, but a day when (Drew Brees) throws for under 200 yards, those are usually on the other side. But what you don't want is the four touchdown passes."

On the running game being shut down. "That made it challenging for sure. They've played well against the run. We knew we'd have to have some passes to open up the running game, especially in the play-action side of things. I thought that part of it went according to plan. What didn't (happen) was the ability to convert some of those runs. We knew we'd have to have some passes to set up the run because they'd played so well against the run. Not to get that part going, I know that was a definite factor in this game."

On the play of the offensive line. "We'll go back through it hard and see if there is a change to be made, we will. Nothing will stop us from doing the job that we need to get done. I'm not saying that we will, but it's definitely something that (general manager) Thomas (Dimitroff) and I will look at over the week."

On the decision to not play Deadrin Senat. "He played better against Dallas. It was just more of factor of how many pass rushers we could get up and get going. He's been at about 15 to 16 snaps and wanted to get the fullback (Ricky Ortiz) back into it. It was just a coaching decision what we thought would be best to win the game."
