Falcons tight end Mickey Shuler, who was making a strong bid for a roster spot, suffered a concussion and is in the league’s concussion protocol program, coach Mike Smith said Tuesday.

In the opener against Miami, Shuler played 18 snaps on offense and 13 on special teams. He caught two passes for 19 yards.

Against the Texans in the second game, he played 24 snaps on offense and 12 on special teams. He caught two passes for 19 yards.

Shuler had a strong offseason and was off to good start in training camp.

Shuler bounced around the league to six teams before signing with the Falcons last September.

“Mickey is right in the thick of it,” tight ends coach Chris Scelfo said recently.
