The Falcons have “some” interest in adding running back Montee Ball, a former Heisman Trophy finalist who cleared waivers on Sunday after he was released by the Denver Broncos, according to the Denver Post.
Ball was the Broncos fourth-string running back and was released after they were awarded center James Ferentz and tight end Mitchell Henry off waivers from the Houston Texans and Green Bay Packers, respectively. He was released along with center Gino Gradkowski, who was claimed by the Falcons.
Ball and Gradkowki are scheme fits because they were working the same offense that offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan learned from Denver coach Gary Kubiak, while with the Houston Texans.
Ball was a second-round pick (58th overall) in the 2013 draft. He played in 21 games and made three starts for the Broncos. He averaged 4.2 yards per carry over the two seasons, but only amassed only 68 yards on 32 carries in the 2015 exhibition season.
Ball was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2011 and won the Doak Walker Award in 2012.
He finished his four-year career as the FBS leader in carries (924), yards rushing (5,140), rushing touchdowns (77) and total touchdowns (82).
