The Falcons selected running back Ito Smith out of Southern Mississippi in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft on Saturday. He was taken with the 126th overall selection.

Smith had 6,344 career all-purpose yards at Southern Mississippi, a school record. He was First Team All-Conference USA last year.

Smith, 5-foot-9, 195 pounds, was a triple threat in the run, pass and return games. Last season as a senior, he carried 248 times for 1,415 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also had 40 receptions for 396 yards and two touchdowns.

“He is very athletic,” Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “He’s a quick stop-start guy with some really good agility. One of the best jump cuts, we think, in the draft this year. He catches the ball very well. Versatile. Also gives us an opportunity to play him on special teams, which we look for in our third running back.”

The Falcons made two sixth-round selection in the draft, taking Russell Gage, wide receiver from LSU, and Foye Oluokun, safety from Yale. They traded their two seventh-round selections to get the extra sixth-round pick for Gage.
