Flowery Branch – Falcons owner Arthur Blank wants to make sure the franchise lands its pending Super Bowl bid and in the future entertain the prospects of hosting the NFL draft.
“Teams in the Super Bowl rotation can’t even bid for the draft or host the draft,” team spokeman Brett Jewkes said on Tuesday. “What Arthur meant was is when there is a time where we have the opportunity, we would love to have the draft, but right now our focus is on the Super Bowl.”
At a soccer event for the Atlanta United, Blank told a reporter that he’d like to see Atlanta host the draft. Blank, who was in Charlotte for part of Tuesday for a business meeting, was not available for comment.
The Falcons are bidding to hosting the Super Bowl in either 2019 or 2020. The NFL owners meet on May 23-24 in Charlotte to vote on the Super Bowl bid.
The NFL draft moved from its longtime New York location last season to Chicago. It’s being held in Chicago again this year, April 28-30.
Denver and Los Angeles have made overtures about hosting the draft after the two-year run in Chicago.
After the Super Bowl issue is settled, the Falcons would like to get in the line to host the NFL draft, too.
