The Falcons slightly reduced their penalties in the exhibition game against the Redskins.
The Falcons had an exhibition season low nine penalties for 89 yards in the, 19-7, loss Thursday. The Falcons had 12 penalties in each of their previous three exhibition games.
The most costly penalty came on the opening offensive drive when left guard Jamon Brown jumped offsides on fourth-and-1. After the penalty, the Falcons had to settle for a field-goal try that kicker Giorgio Tavecchio missed from 39 yards out.
That jumped out in head coach Dan Quinn’s film review of the offensive line.
“Where we were on the protection side of things, I thought that was a big space for us to show improvement and be clean in that spot, too,” Quinn said. “Wish we could have had the short yardage one back where we jumped offsides. But in terms of fouls and going after it and being clean, that was a big upgrade in their performance.”
In the loss to the Dolphins, seven of the 12 penalties were on the special teams units.
There was just one special teams penalty against the Redskins, but it was declined. Rookie defensive end/tackle John Cominsky was called for offensive holding on a punt return that was muffed by Marcus Green and recovered by the Redskins in the third quarter.
