Since the season ended, Mike Shula has been promoted to Carolina’s offensive coordinator position, replacing Rob Chudzinski, who left to become the Cleveland Browns’ head coach. Shula was Cam Newton’s quarterback coach for the past two seasons.

Shula was formerly Alabama's head coach. Newton led Auburn to a national title. But there's no hate in this relationship.

"Just an excellent move," said Newton on Friday night after his jersey was retired at Westlake High in South Fulton County.  "Coach Shula knows me. He knows the things I like to do. He knows how I think and how I feel because of him being with me for two years. It's going to be a fun transition."

Newton said returning home with a victory over the Falcons under his belt made it a little easier. Here's the news story.

"Absolutely, but they went farther than we did, so it was kind of a win-lose thing," Newton said. "They did a really good job with their run. Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, Roddy White and those guys. They played unbelievably in the playoffs. Of course, when I'm not playing them, I'm rooting for them."

It sounds like the College Park native is a closet Falcons' fan.
