Gainesville — Florida cornerback Janoris Jenkins of Pahokee was tased and arrested by Gainesville police early Saturday morning for his reported involvement in a street fight.
Police used a Taser on Jenkins, 20, after he failed to stop fighting, according to a police report. Jenkins was arrested on misdemeanor charges of affray and resisting arrest without violence. He was booked into Alachua County Jail at 3:03 a.m. Saturday and released at 6:25 a.m.
According to the arrest report, Jenkins was fighting with five other people on South Main Street in Gainesville at 2 a.m. when an officer told them to stop and drew out his taser, but no one listened to the command.
At that point, Jenkins hit another person in the head, according to the report, and the officer then used the taser on Jenkins.
Jenkins was hit with one cycle from the Taser, but afterward he stood up and ran away. He kept running after the officer yelled for him to stop, but he was later arrested about one and a half blocks away.
The report states Jenkins told police he was fighting to prevent the potential theft of his chain.
Jenkins was a freshman All-America last year and a starting cornerback on the Gators' national championship team. He became the second Gator in history to start at cornerback on opening day as a true freshman. Jenkins does not have any prior arrests, according to records. According to the state attorney's office, each misdemeanor carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and/or a $500 fine.
Jenkins is the 24th Gator to be arrested since Urban Meyer took over the program in 2005, and the third this offseason. Junior offensive lineman Carl Johnson was cleared of all wrongdoing for violating a temporary restraining order, and walk-on running back Marquis Hannah was charged last month with a second-degree felony for unarmed burglary of an occupied dwelling and a first-degree misdemeanor for battery.
