Georgia Tech freshman Kaela Davis made a statement in her collegiate debut.
Davis, the daughter of former NBA star Antonio Davis, scored 20 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and made four 3-pointers to boost the Yellow Jackets to a 79-57 rout of Coppin State in a women’s basketball game at McCamish Pavilion on Friday.
“Kaela put us on her back a little back,” coach MaChelle Joseph said. “She really made her presence felt.”
Sophomores Nariah Taylor, Aaliyah Whiteside and Sydney Wallace contributed in the rout. Taylor scored a career-high 14 and had seven rebounds. Whiteside scored 10 and had six rebounds. Wallace scored five of the first seven points as Tech bolted to a 7-0 lead, eventually building a 29-point advantage.
Tennessee-Martin 84, Georgia State 80: In a game with 11 lead changes, the Panthers lost on the road in the preseason WNIT despite a school-record 11 3-pointers. Kendra Long scored 30 for GSU. The Panthers also stopped Heather Butler's NCAA-record streak of 80 consecutive games with a 3-pointer. She was 0-for-5.
Men’s games
KSU Tournament: The host Kennesaw State Owls fell behind 34-21 at the half, losing their season opener in the KSU Tournament to Youngstown State 73-57 as the Penguins got 20 points from senior guard Kendrick Perry. Also, Eastern Kentucky hammered Florida International 83-61 as Glenn Cosey scored 17. In Saturday's games, Florida International meets Youngstown State at 3 p.m. and KSU plays Eastern Kentucky at 5:30 p.m.
