Kennesaw State football coach Brian Bohannon won’t have a speech prepared to say to his team before they take the field for their first game at East Tennessee State on Thursday.
He’s not sure he needs one.
“I’ve thought a lot about it,” he said. “A lot of times I speak from my heart and how I feel at the time. I don’t know if there’s going to be any Knute Rockne speeches for this one. If you aren’t ready after all the time we’ve put in, you’re not alive.”
The Owls will conduct their 78th practice — a fall, a spring and an August camp — on Tuesday before they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. on Wednesday.
“The kids are going to be emotionally charged,” Bohannon said. “Keeping them under control will be the bigger problem.”
Bohannon shed a little light on what will become a pre-game ritual.
There is a sign upon which is written, “Win the day.” It’s the theme that Bohannon has stressed since he was hired in March, 2014 and one that he weaves into most answers about building the program.
That sign will hang somewhere in the locker room at Kermit Tipton Stadium and he wants each player to give it a tap as they exit for the field.
