The old Malcolm Mitchell is back.
The star wide receiver’s ability to perform on the football field remains in question, but his impact is being felt in practice. Tuesday’s workout was definitely more lively — and loud — as Mitchell teased and praised his position mates. Once, he purposely jumped in the path of Isaiah McKenzie and knocked him over. Then, helping his teammate up off the ground, he grabbed him and mugged and pointed for a cameraman shooting practice.
Mitchell appears to be feeling better physically as well. He’s now going through almost every drill full speed.
“(He’s) had a lot of energy,” Georgia coach Mark Richt observed. “No one asked him to, but we were on the 20-yard line of the field-turf field, every time he caught the ball, he went all the way to the end zone. He went about 60 or 70 yards after every catch and hustled on back for the next one. So I think he’s really working hard towards being in condition to play as much as we need him.”
Mitchell, who hadn’t played in a game since August of 2013 due to knee injuries, got four snaps against Vanderbilt. He had two passes thrown his way, catching one for an 11-yard gain.
Fellow wideout Justin Scott-Wesley also appears to be ready to play. The same can’t be said for Jonathan Rumph, however. The senior split end is expected to miss his sixth consecutive game with a hamstring injury.
“He had a little bit of a setback last week on the hamstring,” Richt said of Rumph. “I don’t think he’ll play this week.”
Richt said there are no plans to redshirt Rumph. “We plan on playing Rumph,” he said.
