Todd Hartley, who came to Georgia’s rescue as a graduate assistant in 2009, is returning as a full-time professional.

Hartley was hired by the Bulldogs on Tuesday as the director of player personnel, coach Mark Richt announced. He comes to Athens from Marshall University in West Virginia, where he was working as an assistant football coach and recruiting coordinator.

“We’ve worked with Todd in the past at Georgia and he did an excellent job including his interim role with our defensive staff,” Richt said in a news release sent out by UGA. “He’s a tireless worker and having served as recruiting coordinator and on-field coach in recent years he has a strong sense of what we are looking for in a student-athlete at Georgia.”

Hartley served as interim defensive backs coach in 2009 after Willie Martinez had been dismissed. The Bulldogs won the game, 44-20, over a Texas A&M team that entered the game with the nation’s fifth-ranked scoring offense.

Hartley coached safeties for two seasons with the Thundering Herd before switching over to coach tight ends in 2013. A native of Gray and a UGA graduate, Hartley held graduate assistant positions at Georgia and West Virginia before his appointment at Marshall. He is married to the former Jessica Spires and they have three children: son Tucker and daughters Tenley and Teagan.
