Mike Bobo will interview for the head coaching vacancy at Colorado State.

Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity confirmed that news Wednesday morning. When the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator plans to speak with the Rams is unclear.

“Coach (Mark) Richt called me last night and informed me that Mike is interested in pursuing that job,” McGarity said.

The Colorado State job came open when Jim McElwain left last week to become the new head coach at Florida. Like Bobo, McElwain was an offensive coordinator at an SEC school (Alabama) before moving out to Fort Collins, Col.

It will be at least the third head coaching job about which Bobo has been approached. Southern Miss and Georgia Southern have made overtures in the last couple of years. Virginia Tech also offered him its offensive coordinator’s position in 2012.

Those opportunities resulted in a $240,000-a-year raise for Bobo in 2013. But his current salary of $575,000 ranks 40th among assistant coaches nationwide is not commensurate to his accomplishments as Georgia’s offensive coordinator.

The Bulldogs have established yardage and scoring records in each of the three seasons. With one game left to play this season, Georgia has already scored 500 points, and its SEC-leading average of 41.7 is on pace to shatter the record of 37.8 set in 2012.

Bobo, 40, has been on Richt’s staff ever since he came to Athens in 2001. His only other coaching experience is a one-year stint as quarterbacks coach at Jacksonville State in 2000.

Bobo was promoted from quarterbacks coach to play-caller for the Bulldogs at the end of the 2006 season, then took over full time as offensive coordinator for the 2007 season. His quarterbacks, including No. 1 NFL draft pick Matt Stafford and Aaron Murray, have established numerous UGA and SEC records.

Bobo and his wife Lainie have five children.
