Darren Rovell of ESPN reports that the ACC will set a record for most money earned from the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

In a report Saturday on ESPN.com, Rovell explained matters this way:

“Each game played in this year’s tournament is worth $265,791. That money is paid out in each of the next six years (2017-22), with the number for each game, or unit, growing each year of the payout. That puts the total value of a game played in this year’s tournament at more than $1.59 million.

“Through Friday night, ACC teams have earned 23 units, counting their Elite Eight games. They will earn another two from the Final Four, putting the total at 25 units. That’s where the conference will finish, because no units are awarded for the title game. The previous record for the most units earned in a single NCAA tournament was 24 by the Big East in 2009.

“The 25 units are worth at least $39.9 million. The ACC guaranteed itself at least $32.8 million from the 21 units it brought home in last year’s tournament.”

Four of the eight teams remaining in the tournament are from the ACC, and the conference will have two teams in the Final Four and one in the national championship game. The four remaining schools are North Carolina, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Virginia. The Tar Heels and Cavaliers are No. 1 seeds.
