Georgia Tech will hold its first full scrimmage of preseason camp Saturday morning. On Wednesday, coach Paul Johnson said the session, which should run a little more than 100 plays, will give him a better sense of what he has in the newer players on the team.
“It’s like, drills are drills,” Johnson said. “Some guys are better drill players [than game players].”
Johnson said he has a good sense of the development of returning players. The scrimmage will give incoming freshmen in particular a chance to make an impression.
“The young guys, I think you’ve really got to wait and watch them play when they’re out there by themselves, and it’s not a drill, see how they compete,” Johnson said.
Another scrimmage is scheduled for Aug. 20 that will close camp. Johnson will keep an eye on freshman quarterback Vad Lee, whose desire and ability to absorb the offense in a short amount of time has intrigued the coach.
Said quarterbacks and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon: “He has a great calmness about him, great composure for a freshman.”
Tech’s three freshman wide receivers will try to make a case to play this season. Johnson has said he is “pretty sure” one or more will at least make the travel squad, if not play.
Wide receivers coach Buzz Preston said Corey Dennis, Jeff Greene and Darren Waller have shown flashes of progress, but also made typical freshman mistakes.
“They’re coming along,” Preston said.
