Georgia Tech will have three point guards on the roster. The Yellow Jackets coaching staff may be attempting to add a fourth.
Memphis transfer Antonio Barton is considering Tech as a landing spot, Barton’s high school coach said Monday.
“I know they’re interested, and he’s interested, as well, but he’s interested in a lot of other schools, as well,” said Herman Harried, coach at Lake Clifton High in Baltimore.
Tech did not appear on a reported short list, which included Maryland, Syracuse and Kansas State. Barton, a rising senior, will be able to play immediately pending his graduation from Memphis this summer. Maryland would seem a fit for at least two reasons - his daughter Skyy lives in nearby Baltimore and he is close friends with team member Nick Faust.
Barton averaged 24.6 minutes as a freshman, 21.9 as a sophomore and dipped to 16.7 last season as he was replaced in the starting lineup by Joe Jackson. He has averaged 6.9 points per game over his career with an assist-turnover ratio of 142/109.
Barton would give Tech an experienced hand at point guard, as the Jackets will be deep but green at the position.
Solomon Poole, averaged 9.0 minutes in 21 games after joining the team in December straight from high school. Corey Heyward redshirted last season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament. The team also signed Travis Jorgenson in April.
Tech has a roster spot available after the transfer of Julian Royal.
