A Georgia Tech football player was arrested over the weekend on several charges after an altercation in a downtown Athens bar.
Corey Alford, a linebacker from Conyers, was involved in an altercation at the Boar's Head bar around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, said Hilda Sorrow, a spokeswoman for the Athens-Clarke County police.
Two police officers responded and attempted to arrest Alford, Sorrow said, but he resisted. "They tried to escort him out and he would not comply," she said. When they tried to handcuff him, "he tensed his arms and lunged forward," she said.
The officers were finally "able to get him down and handcuff him," she said.
Alford was arrested and charged with public intoxication, disorderly conduct and hindering law enforcement officers, all misdemeanors, Sorrow said.
He was taken to the Athens Clarke County Jail, and was later released on bond.
Alford is a 5-11, 228-pound junior from Heritage High School who joined the Yellow Jackets as a walk-on in 2009.
His player profile on the Georgia Tech athletics website describes him as "an outstanding student" who made the ACC Academic Honor Roll in 2009-10 and the Dean's list in the spring semester.
He played mostly on special teams last year, the website said.
Head coach Paul Johnson has suspended Alford from all team activities, assistant athletic director Dean Buchan said.
