Tech hires Paul Johnson

Navy coach Paul Johnson was introduced Friday as Georgia Tech's 12th head football coach, succeeding the fired Chan Gailey.

He was 45-29 in six seasons at Navy, and guided the Midshipmen to five consecutive bowl games.

He also won two NCAA Division I-AA national championships at Georgia Southern, where he became noted for his use of the triple option offense.

Tech athletics director Dan Radakovich (left) called Johnson "the right choice" for the Yellow Jackets, but he had to wait as Johnson also contemplated the coaching vacancy at SMU.

Johnson, greeted by Tech president Wayne Clough, has agreed to a seven-year contract worth more than $11 million.

Johnson, with his wife Susan (center) and daughter Kaitlyn (in gold sweater) said coming to Tech is "a match made in heaven. There's probably not another program we would have left the Naval Academy for."
