Georgia Tech’s hard-to-believe run of forcing takeaways continued in the first half of Saturday’s game, as the Yellow Jackets forced two Georgia turnovers inside the Tech 5-yard line Saturday.
On Georgia’s third possession of the game, the Bulldogs raced to the Tech 1-yard line on a 65-yard run by running back Nick Chubb, with cornerback Chris Milton saving a touchdown by chasing down Chubb. Chubb was stopped for no gain on first-and-goal. On second down, safety Isaiah Johnson knocked the ball loose from Chubb as he tried to charge through the line. The ball fell to the ground, where linebacker Tyler Marcordes recovered.
On the Bulldogs’ fourth possession, Georgia drove to the Tech 14-yard line. On first-and-10, running back Sony Michel ran to the right sideline, where he had a path to the goal line but was cut off by linebacker Quayshawn Nealy, who jarred the ball loose. It was recovered in the end zone by Johnson for a touchback, a play reminiscent of the touchback forced by cornerback D.J. White when he chased down Pittsburgh running back James Conner.
They were the 15th and 16th takeaways for Tech in the past five games. Georgia, meanwhile, had lost only four fumbles all season prior to Saturday.
