Without playing a snap this past weekend, Georgia Tech moved up two spots in the College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday, rising from No. 18 to No. 16. Losses by Ole Miss (No. 8 in last week’s rankings) and Utah (No. 17) made room in the rankings for Tech to advance.
Among ACC teams, Florida State remained at No. 3, while Clemson moved up one spot to No. 21 and Louisville moved up two to No. 22. The Tigers’ and Cardinals’ rankings are relevant to Tech’s in the event that the ACC champion is chosen to play in the College Football Playoff, which could happen if Florida State defeats Tech in the title game. In that event, the Orange Bowl will take the next highest-ranked ACC team.
Georgia moved up one spot to No. 9. Saturday’s Tech-Georgia game will be the 11th in which both teams are ranked, and it will be the lowest combined ranking since 1966, coach Bobby Dodd’s final season. That year, the No. 7 Bulldogs upset the No. 5 Jackets 23-14 in Athens.
