West Georgia’s 17-game home losing streak to Valdosta State was finally snapped with a decisive 49-28 victory in Carrollton.
Going into Week 6 last season, the Wolves were 5-0 and lost to the Blazers. On Saturday, the team maintained their perfect record and improve to 6-0 (2-0). This is the school’s best start since 2000.
Valdosta State’s second consecutive loss brings their record to 3-2, 0-2 in the Gulf South Conference.
The Wolves’ offense continues to dominate opponents with lopsided offensive stats. The team averaged 7.8 yards per play and gained 474 yards of offense compared with the Blazers 4.4 yards per play 305 total yards.
West Georgia quarterback Dallas Dickey was 16-for-23 passing for 237 yards a touchdown and an interception. The Wolves’ running back LaMarcus Franks led the team in rushing with 174 yards and contributed a 28-yard touchdown pass. Five different Wolves receivers caught touchdown passes.
At the end of the first half the Blazers trailed only 25-21, but their offense was stifled for the rest of the game. Alex Armah, Gabe Freeman and Mario Chapman led the Wolves defense with eight tackles apiece.
The second half started miserably for the Blazers, with two interceptions that the Wolves turned into touchdowns. The Blazers found the end zone again only in the fourth quarter after West Georgia owned the third quarter with three consecutive scoring drives.
The 28 points Valdosta State scored is the highest total an opponent has earned against West Georgia this season.
The highlight of the day for Valdosta State was Cedric O’Neal’s 37th career rushing touchdown which made him the school’s career leader. O’Neal finished the game with 107 yards and two touchdowns.
West Georgia’s next attempt to remain perfect will be Saturday against Delta State in Cleveland, Miss.
Valdosta State will host to Mississippi College on Saturday.
