On Wednesday’s first day of college basketball’s late signing period, the state’s biggest story was about who was not signing.

All eyes were on Jaylen Brown, the 6-foot-7 forward from Wheeler High who is rated as the No. 1 prospect in the state and the No. 2 overall recruit in the nation. He is unsigned and still mulling over his college choices.

Brown is down to eight finalists, including Georgia and Georgia Tech. The two in-state schools are considered long shots because Brown never visited either this past season because of scheduling conflicts.

“My guess is that it’s going to be two or three more weeks with him,” Rivals.com’s Dan McDonald said. “I think he’s trying to sit down and meet with his family and the coaches. He’s trying to figure out what he wants to do.

“I don’t want to say Georgia is out yet, but it seems pretty unlikely that they are going to get him. I think UCLA, Kansas and Kentucky are going to be in the forefront of that one. We’ll see how it all plays out.”

Wednesday was also a slow day for UGA, Tech, Georgia State and Kennesaw State — as none announced men’s signees.

UGA likely will add a player within the next day or so. Michael Edwards, a three-star center from Westland, Mich., committed to the Bulldogs over Nebraska and Kansas State on Monday.

The 6-foot-10 Edwards is UGA’s fourth recruit for this year’s class. The Bulldogs signed three in the early period: Guard William “Turtle” Jackson of Athens and forwards Derek Ogbeide of Pebblebrook and E’torrion Wilridge of Beaumont, Texas.

“I think it’s (Mark) Fox’s best class, without question,” McDonald said. “When you look at it from top to bottom, it’s the first time he has gotten four guys who are really going to be productive players for them.”
