Ray McCallum interviews for Georgia State basketball assistant job
Former Detroit Mercy coach Ray McCallum is interviewing on Thursday for one of the assistant positions on the staff of Georgia State men’s basketball coach Ron Hunter.
McCallum coached at Detroit from 2008-16, and was also the head coach at Ball State from 1993-2000 and Houston from 2000-04. He has also been an assistant on staffs at Ball State, Wisconsin, Michigan, Oklahoma and Indiana.
McCallum twice led the Ball State to the NCAA tournament. He led Detroit there once. He led Houston to the NIT once.
Hunter has two hires to make with the loss of Everick Sullivan, who accepted the head-coaching position at Lenoir-Rhyne, and Darryl LaBarrie, who accepted an assistant position at his alma mater, Georgia Tech.
Like Hunter, who coached his son, R.J., at Georgia State, McCallum coached his son, Ray Jr., at Detroit.
