Hall of Fame women's basketball coach Pat Summitt was the winningest coach in college basketball history. She retired from coaching in 2012 after announcing in August 2011 that she had been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Summitt dies June 28, 2016. She was 64.

Pat Summitt's coaching career at Tennessee began as a 22-year-old head coach in 1974. She went 16-8 in her first season coaching the Lady Vols. In 1977, Summitt's squad featured Cindy Brogdon (left), a transfer from Buford, Ga., with whom she competed in the 1976 Olympics, winning a silver medal.

In 1984, Pat Summitt coached the women's basketball Olympic team to a gold medal, becoming the first U.S. Olympian to win a basketball medal and coach a medal-winning team.

Under Pat Summitt, a seven-time NCAA Coach of the Year, the Lady Vols enjoyed 36 consecutive seasons with 20-plus wins.

At Tennessee, Pat Summitt coached more than a dozen Olympians and had more than 40 players, including Chamique Holdsclaw (right) drafted into the professional ranks.

Pat Summitt, celebrating with her son, Tyler, won eight NCAA women's basketball championships (1987, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2007 and 2008) at Tennessee.

Pat Summitt, a Clarksville, Tenn., native wasn't just a coach, but a true Tennessee fan. She supported the school's athletic teams and would often don her orange cheerleading uniform and sing "Rocky Top" to rally a crowd.

Pat Summit, along with NBA star Isaiah Thomas, was inducted in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000. She said of the honor: “Receiving this honor has made me step back and see where I am. It has helped me to see all that we have accomplished at the University of Tennessee over the past several decades and it shows me that the future is still bright for the Lady Vols. I love this game and want to continue my involvement with it. Being selected to the Hall has given me a lot of motivation for the season and the immediate future.”

Pat Summitt had a 112-23 career record in NCAA Tournament games.

Upon her retirement in 2012, she was named Naismith Coach of the 20th century and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama. Her statue in her likeness stands on Tennessee's Knoxville campus. The Lady Vols play on a court at Thompson Boling Arena named "The Summitt," after the former coach.

From 1974 to 2012 Pat Summitt's Lady Vols won .841 of their games (1,098–208). She retired with the most wins in college basketball history by any coach, man or woman. In 2003, the team (above) celebrated Summitt's 800th victory. In all, Summitt's Lady Vols won 16 SEC championships, including six straight from 1999 to 2004.
