Georgia Tech coach Bobby Ross guided the Yellow Jackets to an 11-0-1 undefeated in 1990 for a share of the national title. The Jackets began the season unranked. Though their rise to top the rankings was controversial, their season was filled with highlights:

Tech entered the season unranked. Clemson and Virginia were widely seen as the top teams in the ACC. But one-by-one the Jackets secured wins over North Carolina State, Maryland, Clemson, Duke, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. A late October meeting at North Carolina ended in a 13-all tie. It was their Week 8 matchup against top-ranked Virginia that catapulted the Jackets to national prominence. ...

The Jackets overcame two 14-point deficits at Charlottesville and a goal-line stand in the final minutes put Georgia Tech in position to hand Virginia one of its most disappointed losses in school history ...

Fans and players celebrate as Georgia Tech clinches the ACC championship with a 42-7 win at Wake Forest. It would be Tech's first ACC title in school history. This photo was taken in the final minutes of the game as Tech players came over to celebrate with fans who had made the road trip to Winston-Salem, N.C.

Georgia Tech entered it's annual matchup with in-state rival Georgia at Athens as the No. 2 team in the country. Quarterback Shawn Jones and the Jackets rolled to a 40–23, a consecutive win over the Bulldogs.

Georgia Tech entered their final game -- a Citrus Bowl matchup with No. 19 Nebraska -- as the No. 2 team in the country. Their 45-21 rout sealed the Jackets' undefeated season -- the lone blemish being a tie against unranked North Carolina.

In only his sophomore season, quarterback Shawn Jones led the Jackets to their first national title since 1952. Jones was named the Citrus Bowl MVP, following a 45-21 throttling of the much favored Nebraska Cornhuskers in Orlando, Fla.

Georgia Tech fans celebrate their 1991 Citrus Bowl victory. Tech's defense stuffed a vaunted Nebraska running attack all game long. The Huskers gained just 126 yards on the ground, down from their season average of 330 per game.

Georgia Tech players and fans celebrate their 1991 Citrus Bowl win. The following day the coaches' poll proclaimed Tech the national champion, while the AP crowned Colorado, which had a loss at Illinois and a neutral-site tie against Tennessee, as the top team in the land. Georgia Tech was forced to split the national title.
