The competition to win Georgia Tech’s kicking job has not wowed coach Paul Johnson.
The race between Shawn Davis, Brenton King and walk-on freshman Wesley Wells does not have a leader, Johnson said following the team’s Monday afternoon practice.
Johnson said that the kickers have not done a great deal of kicking in 11-on-11 situations. Asked if he has liked what he has seen thus far, Johnson responded, “Nothing that really excites me, no.”
Johnson declared the competition “wide open” prior to the start of preseason. Davis won the job last year before tearing his ACL while covering a kickoff in the fifth game of the season. King took over from that point on, making five of six field goals but recording only one touchback in 24 attempts.
In Saturday’s scrimmage, Davis made a field goal from 47 yards (his longer make last year out of two tries was from 34 yards) and King converted from 45 yards (his season long was 42).
Wells, from Lumpkin County High, was a first-team all-state selection. It was thought that another freshman walk-on, Cliff Gandis, was competing, but Johnson said Monday that he suffered a knee injury playing soccer.
