A year after the Georgia Tech roster was depleted by a series of transfers, it appears that the Yellow Jackets will only have two in this cycle, quarterback Jay Jones and linebacker T.D. Roof.
A year ago, eight players transferred out after the 2016 season, including B-back Marcus Marshall and offensive tackle Trey Klock. However, Jones, a redshirt freshman who announced his departure in early December, and Roof, a freshman who transferred to Indiana following his father Ted’s departure to N.C. State, have been the only players to make public their plans. The team held a meeting on Monday and the semester began Tuesday.
Last year, most of the eight who transferred announced their decisions in December or early January prior to the start of the spring semester.
“Don’t think we’re going to have any more attrition, but you never know,” coach Paul Johnson said Tuesday. “It’s possible. Especially when you change things if somebody doesn’t end up being where they want to be.”
Johnson was referring to the hire of defensive coordinator Nate Woody, who will be changing the defensive scheme from a 4-3 or 4-2-5 to a 3-4.
Johnson said that the coaching staff is looking to add three or four more players to the signing class “if it’s the right guys.” Tech signed 18 players in the early signing period in December.
