Georgia Tech has four possible starting quarterbacks, according to the depth chart released Tuesday by the team. In the run-up to the season opener against Tennessee in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game next Monday, coach Paul Johnson is trying to give the Volunteers as much to prepare for as possible.
“I might send it out on Twitter here in a day or two,” Johnson said at his Tuesday news conference. “Who knows?”
The depth chart lists “Matthew Jordan or TaQuon Marshall or Lucas Johnson or Jay Jones.” Johnson said he knows who will start, and figures the team does, as well. Even though he said the four quarterbacks’ playing styles “aren’t as different as you might think,” he just doesn’t want Tennessee to know.
“We try to highlight what each of them do and go from there,” he said. “That’s why I’m not in a big hurry to tell everybody who it is. We may play all four of them in the first game – who knows?”
As he differentiated the four, he said that Jordan was bigger than Marshall, but that Marshall was quicker than Jordan. Johnson is the biggest of the four, and Jones might be the most athletic.
Johnson joked that he might rotate them on a play-by-play basis, using the quarterbacks to bring in the plays from the sideline, a job typically performed by the A-backs.
Tennessee is in a similar position, as Quinten Dormady and Jarrett Guarantano are both competing to succeed Joshua Dobbs. Volunteers coach Butch Jones had not named a starter as of Tuesday afternoon.
