Georgia Tech went through its first full-pads practice of the spring Saturday morning at Bobby Dodd Stadium, a session that included some 11-on-11 scrimmaging.

“I thought that the energy level was pretty good,” coach Paul Johnson said. “Guys were flying around. Like always, some good, some bad. So it was a good first start.”

Defensive tackle Brandon Adams was among players that Johnson recognized as standing out.

“I think Brandon Adams made a lot of plays, but sometimes you have to also look and see who they’re playing against,” Johnson said.

Adams was a backup as a freshman last season. At 6-foot-2 and 349 pounds, Adams was used primarily in short-yardage situations. One challenge he faces is to improve his conditioning level so he can stay on the field for more plays. He played in nine games last season and was credited with seven total tackles.

Johnson seemed reasonably satisfied with the ball security from the first full-pads practice, which was the fourth altogether of the spring. He said that redshirt freshman quarterbacks Lucas Johnson and Jay Jones might have had one fumble. They are likely competing for the No. 2 spot behind Matthew Jordan, who has the inside track on replacing Justin Thomas.

“(Jones) did some good things (Saturday), and so did Lucas Johnson,” Johnson said. “TaQuon did some good things. All those guys played well (Saturday) at times.”

In the competition between KirVonte Benson and Quaide Weimerskirch to back up starting B-back Dedrick Mills, Johnson said that Benson “had a couple nice runs” early in the practice. Benson and Weimerskirch took most of the work in the 11-on-11 portion of practice.

Tech will continue with its fifth practice Monday.
