Georgia quarterback Hutson Mason ranks among college football’s national leaders in two measures of passing proficiency.

Mason has completed 68.4 percent of his passes this season, sixth best among FBS quarterbacks, and has compiled a passing efficiency score of 158.1, eighth best nationally. He leads the SEC in both categories.

Nationally, UCLA’s Brett Hundley is the FBS leader in completion percentage, 72.0. Oregon’s Marcus Mariota leads in passing efficiency, 185.2.

If Mason’s completion percentage holds up, it would be the best in UGA history for a season. The school record of 65.03 percent was set in 1997 by Mike Bobo, now Georgia’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

“He always tells us to complete balls,” Mason said of Bobo. “I think I’m doing a pretty good job of that this year.”

Mason’s predecessor as Georgia’s starting quarterback, Aaron Murray, completed 64.84 percent of his passes last season.

Georgia has thrown the ball less this season than in recent years, largely because of its stellar running game. Mason has completed 160 of 234 passes for 1,786 yards. He has thrown 19 touchdown passes and just three interceptions.
