Maryland transfer Charles Mitchell committed to Georgia Tech Thursday. The 6-foot-8, 260-pound forward had also been considering Georgia and Auburn, among others.

From this Twitter account, Mitchell posted the following message Thursday night: “I’m a G tech yellow jacket now. It’s going to feel great playing right at home.”

Last season, Mitchell averaged 6.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in 18.8 minutes per game. He shot 51.7 percent from the field. A Wheeler High grad, Mitchell chose to leave Maryland after his sophomore to be closer to his ailing grandmother. As a result, he is a strong candidate to receive a hardship waiver from the NCAA and be able to play immediately.

Mitchell’s commitment concludes a remarkable summer for coach Brian Gregory on the transfer market, helping compensate for the transfer of forward Robert Carter to Maryland. On top of three incoming freshmen, Gregory will bring in four transfers – center Demarco Cox (Ole Miss), point guard Josh Heath (South Florida), forward Nick Jacobs (Alabama) and Mitchell. All but Jacobs are likely to be immediately eligible.
