Georgia Tech great Mark Teixeira has found something to do in his retirement. At the request of school president G.P. "Bud" Peterson, Teixeira has accepted a position on the newly formed search committee for the school's next athletic director.

Teixeira, who last week announced his retirement from the Yankees after 14 seasons in the major leagues, was an All-American at Tech and won the Dick Howser Trophy in 2000 as the national player of the year. He was inducted into the school’s athletics hall of fame in 2011.

Thursday, when Peterson announced the formation of the committee, then eight members, he said there was one more person he wanted to ask but had not been able to reach. Athletic director Mike Bobinski resigned his position at Tech Tuesday to take the same position at Purdue.

Teixeira has demonstrated his fidelity to Tech since leaving after the 2001 season. In 2009, he endowed a baseball scholarship. He has donated additionally to the athletic department and helped with fund-raising for the baseball team's clubhouse, training and weight rooms, completed in 2015. The locker room was named in his honor.

“Georgia Tech has always been a special place for me, and I have always welcomed the opportunity to help out the baseball program in any way possible,” Teixeira said in a statement when his scholarship was announced.

Teixeira will retire at the end of the season.
