Georgia Tech guard Francesca Pan was named ACC freshman of the year Tuesday, becoming only the second Yellow Jackets player to earn the honor.

Pan, from Bassano del Grappa, Italy, leads all ACC freshmen in scoring at 11 points per game. She has had five games of 20 points or more and was named ACC rookie of the week five times this season.

Niesha Butler, who won the award in 1999, is the only other Tech player to earn ACC freshman of the year.

“This is a tremendous honor for her and our Georgia Tech women’s basketball program,” coach MaChelle Joseph said in a statement. “My staff has done an outstanding job helping guide her throughout her freshman season. Her toughness and skill set is what separates her. I have been impressed with her consistency and competitiveness in the toughest women’s basketball conference in the country.”

Tech plays Boston College at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the opening round of the ACC tournament in Conway, S.C. The Yellow Jackets earned the No. 10 seed with a 5-11 league record. Boston College is the No. 15 seed. The winner will play No. 7 seed Miami at 6 p.m. Thursday.
