Hutchinson, Kansas – Almost certainly, Kennesaw State’s experience at the NCAA golf championship will not be what the Owls envisioned.
When third-round play was suspended Sunday night due to lightning, Kennesaw State was in 26th out of 30 teams at 27-over par at Prairie Dunes Country Club. The Owls will attempt to complete their round Monday morning.
“We haven’t played extremely well this week, and whatever reason that is, I just think guys have hit shots that haven’t gone where they should have gone and where they intended to go,” coach Jay Moseley said.
Kennesaw State qualified for the NCAA finals by finishing second at the Auburn, Ala., regional, behind defending national champion Alabama but ahead of Auburn, Virginia Tech and Texas. This is the school’s second appearance at the national championship tournament.
Kennesaw State opened play with a 14-over first round and followed it with another 14 over in the second round Sunday. In the third round, the Owls finally got untracked, getting to 1 under before play was halted due to lightning.
“The guys are kind of freed up and just going out and having fun,” Moseley said. “They’re playing well, showing what we’re a little more capable of doing.”
Freshman Teremoana Beaucousin is Kennesaw State’s low scorer for the tournament, at even and a tie for 27th. It’s pretty good for a player ranked 13st by Golfweek/Sagarin. He was followed by Austin Vick (tie for 102nd at 8 over), Jimmy Beck (tie for 117th at 9 over), Kelby Burton (136th at 13 over) and Chris Guglielmo (tie for 139th at 15 over).
“He likes it to be hard and tough and penalizing, because he hits it straight,” Moseley said of Beaucousin. “He hits it straight and he put it in play and avoids big numbers. That’s key for him.”
