Four months after his tumultuous departure from Tennessee, Lane Kiffin tells HBO that Southern California is his dream job and his former players in Knoxville will understand once they are older.
The segment airs on "Real Sports" at 10 p.m. tonight. HBO released video excerpts in advance of the show.
"When you came into Knoxville, the first thing that you preached was loyalty and togetherness," HBO correspondent Andrea Kremer says. "Now you're leaving a year later and there's no loyalty and you're about to break up togetherness."
"I never once told any of those players I'd be there forever," Kiffin replies. "I never made the statement, ‘I'm coming here, This is my dream job, I'm never leaving.' I never made those statements."
"Do you think that made them feel better?" Kremer asks.
"No, but it's part of the business," Kiffin said. "As they get older, they understand it. It's why they put buyouts in contracts."
In the segment, Kiffin's wife, Layla, recalls their "scary" departure, which included people shining lights inside their home and mattresses being burned. She says the couple got threatening phone and text messages from UT fans. One said, "We want to eat your first-born child." Another said, "hope you die on the plane to California."
Kiffin's father, Monte, left his house on the Gulf of Mexico to become UT's defensive coordinator. In a light moment, he says:
"The only thing I wish Lane would have told me [is] that we were only going to be there one year and I would have rented. I bought a house!"
Kiffin also discusses his exit from the Oakland Raiders, where he was 5-15. Kremer asks why his tenure ended so badly.
"Well, let's go with the law of averages," Kiffin says. "How many Raiders coaches ended real great? It's Al Davis. He's gonna run the whole thing. What's going to happen is whatever he feels like that day."
HBO reveals the 35-year-old Kiffin, who was USC's offensive coordinator under Pete Carroll, is making about $4 million annually as head coach, according to the Orange County Register.
The show will be replayed multiple times through June 6, and available on demand from May 24-June 14.
