At its signing day news conference, Kentucky handed out a list of signed recruits to media before collecting them a few minutes later.

That prompted speculation that perhaps the Wildcats had added another player to what is shaping up to be their best-ever class (No. 14 nationally according to Rivals).

But it turns out Kentucky made a last-minute subtraction.

Defensive back Michael Mathis deleted from #Kentucky signing list. "We reached our limit of 28," spokesman said.

So the Wildcats waited until signing day to let Mathis know he was no longer wanted. Not surprisingly, this is the kind of story that inspires less outrage from fans than recruits who unexpectedly “flip” their commitments at the last moment.

Mathis, a safety from Kilgore (Tex.) Junior College, committed to Kentucky in September and made his official visit on Jan. 24, according to 247sports.com.
