Over their bye week, Kennesaw State players were challenged mentally and physically by coach Brian Bohannon.

After having Saturday and Sunday off, the Owls came back to Monday’s practice, fully energized.

“I challenged them on Friday, gave them the weekend off and they came back and practiced really well (on Monday),” Bohannon said. “The challenge has all been about us right now. We have to learn to get out of our own way and not beat ourselves.”

The Owls (1-1) had an early open date after winning their first game of the season against Point and are continuing their hard work with Wednesday and Thursday practices before they travel to Pittsburgh for Saturday’s game against Duquesne.

For defensive back Derrick Farrow, the bye week was not about rest as much as it was focus.

“We tried to come out and take advantage of (the bye),” Farrow said. “We came out every day and keep the focus on high and get better. We used last week as a week to get better and not just as an off week.”

Quarterback Chandler Burks will start his second game for Kennesaw State this weekend after using the extra reps in practice to build camaraderie with the offense.

For Burks, the extra practices built confidence.

“(The bye) is a good thing for us and it’s a process to continue to work on every day,” Burks said. “(The extra time over the bye) allows me to mesh with the two backs the receivers and be able to get confidence in not only myself but in them as a unit.”
