Georgia Tech men’s and women’s basketball teams will wear custom uniforms in upcoming games in celebration of Black History Month.
The Adidas-designed uniforms were inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, specifically the wooden floors of the ballrooms used for dance events, jazz concerts and basketball games were played in the early 20th century in the New York borough of Harlem, which became a cultural mecca for black Americans. The patterns of the uniforms will also mimic the fabrics and prints of that era.
All 11 power-conference teams that are sponsored by Adidas will have the specially-designed uniforms. The Tech men will wear its uniform Wednesday for its home game against Clemson and again February 16 for its home game vs. Florida State. The Tech women will wear its special uniform for its Thursday home game vs. Pittsburgh.
For the men’s team, it’s the second alternate uniform that the team has worn this season. It debuted its “winter whites” uniform in its home loss to Georgia Dec. 22.
“We’re excited and proud to participate in celebrating black culture and Black History Month by wearing these special uniforms for our next two home games,” Tech men’s coach Josh Pastner said in a statement. “This is just a small gesture in the grand scheme, but it’s important for us to recognize the amazing work and accomplishments of these leaders not only during this month, but every day.”
“We are so honored to be a part of recognizing Black History Month,” Tech women’s coach MaChelle Joseph said in a statement. “Adidas has done an amazing job of creating a first class uniform and shoes for us to represent the contributions of so many amazing leaders and humanitarians.”
