Georgia Tech added the 19th and 20th members of its 2018 signing class Wednesday morning, with hopes of a third to be added later in the day.
Parkview High running back Christian Malloy and Rome High defensive lineman Ja’Quon Griffin signed letters of intent with Tech on the first day of the late signing period. Malloy committed previously to Florida International. Griffin chose Tech over Tulane and Appalachian State.
“We got on (Malloy) a little bit late, but we always kind of followed him,” coach Paul Johnson said Wednesday. “He had a knee injury early on his junior year, and I think that limited his recruitment a little bit early, but after we watched him play this year, it was pretty clear to us that he had regained his speed and mobility, especially toward the end of the year.”
Johnson said that Malloy, a three-star prospect (247 Sports composite) who is listed at 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds, will begin as a B-back.
Griffin, 6-0 and 275 pounds, is projected as a defensive end in new defensive coordinator Nate Woody’s 3-4 defense. A three-star prospect, Griffin is a two-time all-state selection who helped Rome win back-to-back state championships as a junior and senior. Johnson described him as explosive and strong.
“Our defensive staff feels like he can come in and compete right away for some playing time, and that’s an area where we want to build some depth,” Johnson said.
Johnson said that he was expecting a third letter of intent Wednesday evening. That would bring Tech to its 85-scholarship limit for the 2018-19 academic year.
It is not Pike County running back C’Bo Flemister, who committed to Tech in December, but did not sign in the early signing period. He signed with Notre Dame on Wednesday.
