In April, Georgia Tech right guard Shamire Devine said he wanted to lose 24 pounds to get to 335 by the start of preseason camp. Friday afternoon – report day for the Yellow Jackets – Devine wasn't quite there.

He pronounced himself “close-ish.” He was hopeful that practicing in full pads in August in the Georgia heat will help him reach his weight goal. During summer workouts, Devine ran on a treadmill and did other cardiovascular work like jump rope while the rest of his teammates did their weightlifting workouts. He came back later in the day to do his own weightlifting.

He described the weight-loss process as tough, “especially when you put in some real work, grinding and everything, and then you get on the scale and you’re like, How did I gain two pounds?”

Devine said he has been eating better (chicken and tuna) and has avoided eating after 6 p.m., “so I don’t go to sleep with food in my belly.”

The Yellow Jackets could use a fit and healthy Devine at right guard, as the offensive line returns starters at all four other spots. If Devine, a powerful and remarkably agile blocker, can play consistently, it would enable coaches to not have to shuffle the line in order to fill the spot, vacated by graduated All-American Shaquille Mason.

“It feels great (to be in camp), actually,” Devine said.
