Georgia Tech: Corey Heyward likely out for season with ACL

July 2, 2012

Georgia Tech incoming freshman point guard Corey Heyward is most likely out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last Thursday in a pickup game.

Heyward, a Peachtree Ridge High graduate, could conceivably return in January or February, which would give coach Brian Gregory a decision to make on whether to redshirt him. The more likely scenario is that Heyward, who signed with Tech out of Hargrave Military Academy after an all-state senior season at Peachtree Ridge, will redshirt and have four years of eligibility starting in the 2012-13 season.

Heyward, son of the late NFL star Craig Heyward, enrolled at Tech in May and has been working out with the team. Since his arrival, he had already impressed Gregory with his toughness and work ethic. Heyward had been expected to back up senior Mfon Udofia at the point this season.

"We feel terrible about his injury, but it's a temporary setback and we'll be with him every step of the way back," Gregory said in a statement.
