Georgia’s preseason depth chart lists John Theus as the No. 1 player as both left and right tackle. Of course, his name is followed by the word “OR” in bold-faced letters and all caps.

That pretty much sums up how solidified the Bulldogs’ situation is on the offensive line. As in, not at all.

“That’s going to be something that works out in camp,” said offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, speaking to beat reporters Wednesday on the eve of the Bulldogs’ preseason camp. “Y’all hear it every year, but it’s going to be the best five, the ones we feel like gives us the best chance to move the football effectively and score points. So we’ll have to see.”

Theus, a 6-foot-6, 313-pound junior, started the past two seasons at right tackle. But he signed with the Bulldogs out of Jacksonville’s Bolles School as a 5-star prospect and the anticipated left tackle of the future and worked there primarily in the spring.

Meanwhile, senior Kolton Houston (6-5, 287) is not listed at all at left tackle but will be getting a strong look there in camp, according to camp. Houston is also listed as the starter at left guard. Senior Mark Beard (6-5, 297) is listed as the backup and has played there his entire UGA career. Watts Dantzler (6-7, 320) is third on the depth chart at left and right tackle but also could play either guard, Bobo said.

Only senior center David Andrews is undisputed as the start at his position.

“We’ve just got to figure our that’s our best combination that’s going to give us the best success and create competition for those guys to get on the field,” Bobo said.

Which is not to say Bobo lacks confidence in the line the Bulldogs will field this fall.

“We feel like we’re a little more athletic than we’ve been in the past,” he said. “Bottom line is we’ve still got to go out and do it. But we’ve got a chance to be pretty good up front.”
