Things to know if you’re going to games at Sanford Stadium:
Tickets
Season tickets are sold out, and as of mid-August the University of Georgia had single-game tickets available only to Saturday’s opener against Louisiana-Lafayette ($45 each). Tickets to all games can be found — at various prices — through online resellers.
What’s new
The biggest change at Sanford Stadium is the construction of an entry plaza in the “Reed Alley” area behind the north stands, providing additional concession areas and restrooms. The project is scheduled to be completed on Thursday, two days before the season opener.
Tailgating
After some much-publicized trashings of the historic North Campus in recent seasons, UGA has implemented new rules that will clamp down on tailgating there. North Campus tailgating can’t begin until four hours before kickoff, and these items will not be permitted: tents, kegs, generators, televisions, amplified music, grills or cookers of any type, tables longer than 4 feet and household furniture (folding chairs are OK). For tailgating purposes, UGA defines North Campus as the area bounded by Broad, Lumpkin, Baldwin and Jackson streets, including the quadrangle between Broad Street and Old College, the quadrangle between Old College and the Main Library, and Herty Field.
Parking
Parking permits for most lots nearest Sanford Stadium are allocated by the athletic association to donors through a points system. Most of the free public parking on game days is found in the decks in the East Campus area, surrounding the Ramsey Center off College Station Road. Overflow free parking is on the intramural fields, used after all spaces in the East Campus decks and surface lots are filled. In addition, UGA Parking Services sells, on a first-come, first-serve basis, season permits in six other parking decks on campus ($120 for the season). Check gameday.uga.edu for availability.
Traffic
Athens’ population doubles on game days, overwhelming the city’s smaller streets. Postgame traffic generally is directed to the Ga. 10 Loop, which circles Athens and provides access to all routes out of town. UGA advises tuning into 1650 AM for traffic and parking info on game days.
Campus transit
Free shuttle service is available to Sanford Stadium from the East Campus Parking Deck /Ramsey Center area and the intramural-fields area. Shuttles run continuously for 5 1/2 hours before kickoff and will drop fans off at the stadium’s Gate 6 until 15 minutes before kickoff. (Gates open two hours before kickoff.) Return shuttles will run for two hours after games.
Dining
UGA Food Services operates various on-campus dining options on game days, including the Red Clay Cafe (at Joe Frank Harris Commons); Oglethorpe Dining Commons (on University Court just off Lumpkin Street); the Village Summit (top level of Joe Frank Harris Commons); Snelling Dining Commons; and various restaurants within the Tate Student Center.
