Former UGA linebacker to remain in jail for 10 more days

April 7, 2010

Former Georgia linebacker Montez Robinson was given a $10,000 bond Tuesday afternoon -- but he will remain in jail for at least another 10 days for violating the terms of his probation.

Athens-Clarke Chief Magistrate Judge Patricia Barron set the $10,000 bond for Robinson, Athens-Clarke County jail records confirm. However, he cannot post it until he is arraigned in State Court on April 16, said Chief Assistant Solicitor Ryan Hope. If he posts bond, Robinson must live with a family member, Hope said.

Robinson turned himself in Sunday on a misdemeanor charge of simple battery/family violence, and he also was charged Monday with probation violation, according to Clarke County Sheriff’s Office records.

He could have his probation hearing on April 15 but is likely to have that hearing on the same day as his arraignment, Hope said.

Robinson was dismissed from the UGA team Sunday night, coach Mark Richt announced.

“Montez has not been able to conform to some conditions and stipulations that were placed on him as a result of previous off-field issues,” Richt said in a statement. “I think this decision is in the best interest of everyone.”

Earlier Sunday, Clarke County Sherriff’s Sgt. Farrell Johnson said Robinson had turned himself in on a warrant issued by the Athens-Clarke County Magistrate Court on Saturday. According to Sherriff’s Office records, Robinson was booked into the jail at 12:40 p.m. Sunday.

According to the arrest warrant, the victim in the latest incident was the same woman as in two earlier cases that resulted in Robinson’s probation.

Robinson was charged late last year with misdemeanor simple battery and second-degree criminal damage. The criminal-damage charge was for allegedly breaking the taillights on the woman’s car.

The latest arrest warrant alleges that Robinson “grabbed and pushed [the woman] off of his bed and then picked her up and slammed her on the ground” Friday.

Robinson, 20, from Avon, Ind., was a backup defensive end as a freshman last fall but moved to outside linebacker in Georgia’s revamped defense this spring. He already had been suspended from Georgia’s first two games of the 2010 season because of the previous arrests.
